Afyon Kocatepe University (AKÜ) — known in Turkish as Afyon Kocatepe Üniversitesi — is a public university in Afyonkarahisar, central western Turkey. Founded in 1992, the university takes its name from Kocatepe Hill outside Afyon, where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk directed the final offensive of the Turkish War of Independence in 1922 — a name with strong nationalist resonance.
Standing: AKÜ is considered one of the better Turkish public universities, drawing many international students — especially Arabs — thanks to broad program offerings and a calm city setting.
Language of instruction: Both Turkish and English options exist across most programs.
15 faculties — an unusually broad range for a mid-sized public university:
Graduate institutes: Sciences, Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Educational Sciences, and Fine Arts — five graduate institutes plus around 15 vocational schools.
Research infrastructure: The university operates a large central library, multiple research labs, and scientific research centres.
Admission: AKÜ accepts SAT, YÖS, and high-school diplomas. Apply at akuyos.aku.edu.tr.
Tuition (international students): Approximately $700–2,000 per year for most undergraduate programs; medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy are higher (~$3,000–5,000).
Scholarships: Türkiye Bursları is the primary path for full government funding.
Living in Afyonkarahisar: A mid-sized city in central western Turkey, famous for its thermal springs (kaplıca), Turkish delight, and dairy products. Cost of living is low — student rent typically $120–250/month — and the city is centrally located, with easy bus connections to Istanbul, Ankara, and the Aegean coast.
Recognition: Diplomas are accredited by Turkey's YÖK and recognised across the Arab world.
