Gebze Technical University (GTÜ) — known in Turkish as Gebze Teknik Üniversitesi — is a public technical university in Gebze, a district of Kocaeli province, approximately 40 km east of Istanbul on the Sea of Marmara. Founded on 3 July 1992 as the Gebze Institute of High Technology, it was promoted to full university status and operates in the heart of Turkey's industrial corridor between Istanbul and Izmit.
Ranking: GTÜ holds approximately the 63rd rank among Turkish public universities — a strong placement that significantly understates its standing in engineering, where it competes with top-tier institutions.
Selective admission: GTÜ is known for accepting a relatively small number of international students, with competitive selection — making admission more difficult than at most Turkish public universities, but enhancing the prestige of its diploma.
Language of instruction: Both Turkish and English options across most programs.
International programs: GTÜ participates in the Erasmus+ student-exchange program with leading European universities.
4 faculties and 6 research centres:
Admission: GTÜ accepts SAT, YÖS, and high-school diplomas with adequate GPA. Apply at obs.gtu.edu.tr.
Tuition (international students): Approximately $800–2,500 per year for most undergraduate programs — reflecting GTÜ's stronger engineering reputation.
Scholarships: Türkiye Bursları (full government scholarship) is the main pathway for fully funded international study.
Living in Gebze: Gebze is an industrial town with strong connections to Turkey's automotive, chemical, and shipbuilding industries — meaning students benefit from accessible internships and on-site visits. The town is approximately 1 hour from central Istanbul by train (via the Marmaray line) or by bus. Cost of living is significantly below Istanbul — student rent typically $200–400/month — with relatively easy access to the capital.
Recognition: Diplomas are accredited by Turkey's YÖK (Higher Education Council) and recognised across the Arab world and internationally. GTÜ is highly attractive for serious engineering students who want a competitive technical university with strong industry ties and proximity to Istanbul.
