Hakkari University (Hakkari Üniversitesi) is a public university in the city of Hakkari, in the far southeast of Turkey near the borders with Iran and Iraq. Founded in 2008, it is one of the most remote Turkish public universities.
Ranking: Hakkari holds approximately the 137th rank among Turkish public universities — a lower-tier placement reflecting its small size and very remote location.
Important note on international admission: In past years, Hakkari has not allowed international students to register through standard application channels. Acceptance has been very limited and may change year to year. Verify current international-student admission status directly with the university before planning to apply.
Language of instruction: Turkish only across all programs.
Erasmus exchange: Despite its remote location, Hakkari is a member of the Erasmus+ student-exchange program with European universities.
Structure: The university operates 5 faculties and 3 research and application centres.
Notable programs:
Admission: Hakkari accepts its own YÖS exam only, and admission for international students is historically very limited. Verify current status before applying.
Tuition (international students): Approximately $300–800 per year for most undergraduate programs — among the lowest in Turkey.
Scholarships: Türkiye Bursları (full government scholarship) is the main pathway for fully funded international study, where available.
Living in Hakkari: Hakkari sits at high altitude (~1,700 m) in the rugged southeastern mountains, with very cold snowy winters, traditional Kurdish-Turkish regional culture, and extremely low cost of living — student rent typically $80–150/month. The setting is remote and dramatic, surrounded by some of Turkey's most stunning mountain landscapes. However, security and logistical conditions can vary, and the region is significantly more isolated than other Turkish university towns.
Recognition: Diplomas are accredited by Turkey's YÖK and recognised across the Arab world. Most international applicants should consider other Turkish public universities instead unless they have specific reasons to attend Hakkari and have confirmed current admission availability.
Strongly verify current international-student admission policy with the university before applying — historic acceptance has been very limited.
