Istanbul 29 Mayıs University is a private university in Istanbul named after a date with deep significance — 29 May 1453, the day Sultan Mehmed II conquered Constantinople. The university itself was founded on 29 May 2010.
Academic focus: The university specialises in the humanities and social sciences, organised into 3 faculties offering undergraduate and graduate programs. Its small size allows close academic mentorship and seminar-style teaching.
Arabic-language teaching — a defining strength: The university gives special importance to Arabic and runs a dedicated preparatory year in Arabic before the main bachelor's program (Lisans).
The university established ARUMER (the Centre for Arabic Language Studies) — the first of its kind in the Republic of Turkey. Until recently, Arabic-language teaching was tightly regulated in Turkey, making ARUMER a landmark institution for Arabic studies.
ARUMER faculty: The centre includes 25 native Arabic-speaking professors who teach Arabic to university students and ARUMER trainees, while also contributing to the centre's research and publication projects that serve the Arabic language.
Why this matters: For Arab students, 29 Mayıs is one of the few Turkish private universities where Arabic isn't just a foreign-language requirement — it's a core part of the academic mission. This is particularly valuable for students pursuing Islamic studies, history, philosophy, or social sciences where access to classical Arabic sources matters.
Faculties:
Admission: No YÖS required. Standard requirements: high school diploma and Arabic/Turkish/English proficiency depending on program. Apply at 29mayis.edu.tr.

Scholarships: Merit-based scholarships available for top-performing students; many Arab-origin students receive substantial discounts based on their record.
Recognition: YÖK-accredited. Particularly well-regarded across the Arab world for its Arabic and Islamic studies programs.
