İzmir Democracy University (İDÜ) — known in Turkish as İzmir Demokrasi Üniversitesi — is a public university founded in 2016 in İzmir, Turkey's third-largest city, on the Aegean coast. The university was established as part of Turkey's effort to expand higher-education capacity in the western Aegean region, and is officially accredited by the Turkish Council of Higher Education (YÖK).
Ranking: İDÜ holds approximately the 173rd rank among Turkish public universities — a lower-tier placement that reflects its young age. As one of Turkey's newest universities, İDÜ is still building its academic reputation, but benefits from the prestige and infrastructure of being based in İzmir.
Language of instruction: Both Turkish and English are used as official languages of instruction across all programs — making it more accessible for international students.
Structure: The university operates 10 faculties, 3 institutes, and 3 graduate-studies institutes.
Notable faculties and programs:
Admission: İDÜ accepts SAT, YÖS, and high-school diplomas with adequate GPA. Apply at obs.idu.edu.tr.
Tuition (international students): Approximately $800–2,500 per year for most undergraduate programs; medicine and dentistry are higher (~$3,500–6,000).
Scholarships: Türkiye Bursları (full government scholarship) is the main pathway for fully funded international study.
Living in İzmir: İzmir is Turkey's third-largest city, with a population of over 4 million, located on the Aegean coast. The city has a relaxed, secular, and cosmopolitan atmosphere, mild Mediterranean climate, an excellent waterfront (the Kordon promenade), and strong public transport including a metro and ferries across the bay. Cost of living is below Istanbul — student rent typically $300–600/month — and İzmir is famous for its food, beaches, and easy access to ancient sites like Ephesus and Pergamon.
Recognition: Diplomas are accredited by Turkey's YÖK (Higher Education Council) and recognised across the Arab world. İDÜ is particularly attractive to students who want to study in İzmir at a public university with English-medium options, who value Aegean coastal living, and who are comfortable being at a younger institution still building its profile.
Verify current English-medium program list and SAT/YÖS thresholds for medical programs directly with the university before applying.
