Karabük University (KBÜ) — known in Turkish as Karabük Üniversitesi — is a public university in the city of Karabük, in Turkey's northwestern Black Sea region. Founded on 29 May 2007, the university operates in a city historically known as Turkey's first major iron-and-steel manufacturing centre (the famous Karabük Iron and Steel Works was established in 1937).
Language of instruction: Both Turkish and English options across most programs.
Distinctive institutes: Karabük is one of the only Turkish public universities with a dedicated Iron and Steel Institute — reflecting the city's industrial heritage and giving students unique access to applied metallurgy research.
Notable faculties:
Higher institutes:
Admission: Karabük accepts its own YÖS exam ("YÖS 2") only — SAT and high-school diplomas alone are not accepted. Apply at yos.karabuk.edu.tr.
Tuition (international students): Approximately $500–1,500 per year for most undergraduate programs; medicine higher (~$2,500–4,500).
Scholarships: Türkiye Bursları (full government scholarship) is the main pathway for fully funded international study.
Living in Karabük: Karabük is a mid-sized industrial city in northwestern Turkey, surrounded by forested mountains. The nearby Safranbolu (a UNESCO World Heritage site with Ottoman-era wooden houses) is one of Turkey's most beautiful historic towns. Cost of living is well below Istanbul — student rent typically $150–250/month — and the city is reachable from Ankara (~3 hours) and Istanbul (~5 hours) by road.
Recognition: Diplomas are accredited by Turkey's YÖK (Higher Education Council) and recognised across the Arab world. Karabük is particularly attractive for students interested in engineering, metallurgy, or civil aviation at affordable cost.
Note: Karabük requires its own institution-specific "YÖS 2" exam. Verify dates, fees, and exam centres directly with the university before applying.
