Manisa Celal Bayar University (MCBU) opened in 1992 in the city of Manisa, near İzmir in western Turkey. Its emblem features a tulip — symbolising love, knowledge, and development — and the university is named after Celal Bayar, a close companion of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and a key figure in the founding of the Turkish Republic.
From three institutions to ten faculties: MCBU started its first year with just three institutions: the Higher Institute of Accounting, the Sports Youth Academy, and the Institute of Education. Today it operates 10 faculties, 5 higher schools, 15 vocational schools, 3 institutes, and 20 research centres.
Regional position: MCBU is one of the three largest universities in the Aegean region and a destination for thousands of students. It ranks 95th nationally.
Language of instruction: Turkish across all programs.
Notable faculties and programs:
Admission cycle: International student registration opens annually in the 6th month (June) and closes in the 7th month (July).
Admission: MCBU accepts only the university's own YÖS exam for international applicants. Apply at uygulama2.cbu.edu.tr/yos.
Tuition (international students): Approximately $400–1,200 per year; medicine and dentistry are at the higher end.
Scholarships: Eligible for Türkiye Bursları full government scholarship.
Accommodation: KYK state dormitories and private housing widely available in Manisa. Living costs are very affordable — typical monthly expenses $250–450.
Why Manisa: A historic Aegean city (former Ottoman capital of Saruhan province), 40 km from İzmir, with a milder climate and lower living costs than İzmir itself. Strong agricultural and industrial base, very welcoming to students.
Recognition: YÖK-accredited and recognised across the Arab world.
