Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University (MSGSÜ) — known in Turkish as Mimar Sinan Güzel Sanatlar Üniversitesi — is a public university dedicated to the fine arts and architecture, located in Istanbul. Although it gained university status in 1982, its institutional origins go back to 1882, when the Ottoman painter and archaeologist Osman Hamdi Bey founded the Sanayi-i Nefise Mekteb-i Şahane (Imperial School of Fine Arts) — making it Turkey's oldest fine-arts academy. The university is named after Mimar Sinan, the legendary 16th-century Ottoman chief architect who designed the Süleymaniye and Selimiye mosques.
Distinctive identity — Turkey's premier fine-arts institution: MSGSÜ has produced many of Turkey's most celebrated artists, architects, and designers. The university's identity is built around fine arts, architecture, and humanities — it does not offer engineering, medicine, or business programs.
Language of instruction: Turkish is the official language. International students typically complete TÖMER Turkish preparation before joining their main degree. Some programs may offer partial English support — verify directly.
European exchange: MSGSÜ participates actively in the Erasmus+ student-exchange program with some of Europe's most prestigious arts and architecture universities.
Structure: The university operates 5 faculties and 4 institutes, plus a State Conservatory and an informatics department.
Notable faculties and programs:
Admission: MSGSÜ accepts SAT and YÖS; many fine-arts and architecture programs also require special-talent exams (yetenek sınavı) — applicants typically need to submit portfolios or pass auditions. The application process is partially manual; applicants may need to send documents to:
Student Affairs Office, Meclis-i Mebusan Caddesi, No: 24 Fındıklı 34427 Istanbul/TURKEY
Tuition (international students): Approximately $1,000–3,000 per year for most undergraduate programs.
Scholarships: Türkiye Bursları (full government scholarship) is the main pathway for fully funded international study.
Living in Istanbul: MSGSÜ's main campus is in the historic Fındıklı neighbourhood on the European side, directly on the Bosphorus, near Kabataş and Tophane — close to Istanbul Modern, the museums of Beyoğlu, and major cultural institutions. Student rent in central Istanbul typically runs $400–800/month.
Recognition: Diplomas are accredited by Turkey's YÖK (Higher Education Council) and especially highly regarded in fine arts, architecture, and cultural-heritage fields. MSGSÜ is the top choice in Turkey for students with serious artistic or architectural ambitions and a clear arts portfolio.
Important: most fine-arts programs require portfolio submissions or special-talent exams. Verify the specific application requirements for your chosen program directly with the university well in advance.
