Selçuk University is a major public university in Konya, central Turkey. Founded in 1971 as the Konya Academy of Architecture, it transformed into Selçuk University in 1975 and has grown into one of Turkey's largest universities by enrolment.
Scale: Ranked 16th among Turkish universities, with 23 faculties, 45 research and applied centres, and more than 70,000 students. The university supports an evening program system, making it accessible to working students.
Language of instruction: Turkish is the primary language across all programs.
From 2 faculties to 23: Selçuk started with just two faculties (Arts and Basic Sciences), 7 departments, and 327 academic staff. Today it operates 23 faculties — a remarkable growth trajectory that reflects Konya's emergence as a major educational hub.
Notable faculties and programs:
Admission: Selçuk accepts only the university's own YÖS exam for international applicants. Apply at suyos.selcuk.edu.tr.
Tuition (international students): Approximately $400–1,200 per year; medicine and dentistry are at the higher end.
Scholarships: Eligible for Türkiye Bursları full government scholarship.
Accommodation: KYK state dormitories, private student housing, shared apartments. Living costs in Konya are notably low — typical monthly expenses $250–450.
Why Konya: Konya is a historic religious-cultural city — home of the Mevlevi Sufi order and the shrine of Mevlana Rumi. It has a deeply conservative cultural atmosphere, large international student community, and is one of Turkey's most affordable cities for student life.
Recognition: YÖK-accredited; the Faculty of Islamic Sciences is particularly well-regarded across the Arab world.
