Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University (NKÜ) — known in Turkish as Tekirdağ Namık Kemal Üniversitesi — is a public university in Tekirdağ, on the European shore of the Sea of Marmara, west of Istanbul. Founded in 2006, the university is named after Namık Kemal, the 19th-century Ottoman poet, dramatist, and intellectual whose constitutionalist writings inspired Turkish democratic thought.
Ranking: NKÜ holds approximately the 63rd rank among Turkish public universities — a strong placement among regional Marmara-region universities.
Language of instruction: Predominantly Turkish. International students typically complete TÖMER Turkish preparation before joining their main degree.
Structure: The university operates 9 faculties, multiple research and applied-research centres, institutes, and vocational schools. Masters and doctoral programs are available, plus European student-exchange agreements through Erasmus+.
Notable faculties:
Admission: NKÜ accepts high-school diplomas with adequate GPA as a primary admission path — a relatively open policy. Apply at basvuru.nku.edu.tr.
Tuition (international students): Approximately $500–1,500 per year for most undergraduate programs; medicine and veterinary medicine are higher (~$2,500–4,500).
Scholarships: Türkiye Bursları (full government scholarship) is the main pathway for fully funded international study.
Living in Tekirdağ: Tekirdağ is a coastal city on the Sea of Marmara, approximately 1.5–2 hours west of Istanbul by road. The region is famous for its wine production (Tekirdağ has Thrace's largest vineyards), sunflower fields, and rich Ottoman heritage. Cost of living is significantly below Istanbul — student rent typically $200–400/month — and the city's proximity to Istanbul gives students easy weekend access.
Recognition: Diplomas are accredited by Turkey's YÖK (Higher Education Council) and recognised across the Arab world. NKÜ is particularly attractive for students who want a top-65 public university with a coastal setting and easy access to Istanbul.
