Bursa Uludağ University (BUÜ) — known in Turkish as Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi — is a major public university in Bursa, Turkey's fourth-largest city and a key industrial centre south of the Sea of Marmara. Founded in 1975, the institution was originally Bursa University, renamed Uludağ University by law in 1982, and most recently renamed in 2018 to its current form. The name Uludağ comes from Mount Uludağ, Turkey's most famous winter ski destination, which towers above Bursa.
Structure: The university operates 11 faculties, 1 undergraduate school, 12 vocational schools, 1 music institute, 3 institutes, 11 research centres, and 6 administrative units under the rectorate.
Notable faculties:
Admission: BUÜ accepts SAT and YÖS for international students. High-school diplomas alone are typically not sufficient. Apply at yos.uludag.edu.tr.
Language of instruction: Predominantly Turkish, with English-medium options in select programs. International students typically complete TÖMER Turkish preparation.
Tuition (international students): Approximately $700–2,000 per year for most undergraduate programs; medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine are higher (~$3,000–5,000).
Scholarships: Türkiye Bursları (full government scholarship) is the main pathway for fully funded international study.
Living in Bursa: Bursa is a major industrial city (population ~3 million) at the foot of Mount Uludağ. The city is reachable from Istanbul in ~2 hours by fast ferry across the Sea of Marmara. Cost of living is significantly below Istanbul — student rent typically $200–400/month — and Bursa is famous for being the Ottoman Empire's first capital, its silk industry, and its automotive/industrial economy (it hosts Renault and Fiat plants). The proximity of Mount Uludağ offers world-class skiing in winter and dramatic alpine hiking in summer.
Recognition: Diplomas are accredited by Turkey's YÖK (Higher Education Council) and recognised across the Arab world and internationally. BUÜ is particularly attractive for students seeking a major comprehensive public university in a large industrial city with strong industry connections and high-quality of life.
Verify current SAT/YÖS thresholds for medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine (highly competitive) directly with the university before applying.
