Near East University (NEU) is among the most prestigious private universities in the Eastern Mediterranean. Founded in 1988 in Nicosia, the capital of Northern Cyprus, NEU has grown into a globally recognised research institution that consistently ranks among the top universities in Turkey and Cyprus.
Student body: Over 26,000 students, including thousands of international students from approximately 100 countries — making NEU one of the most internationally diverse universities in the region.
Academic structure: 20 faculties, around 218 graduate (master's and PhD) programs, multiple vocational institutes, and 4 vocational schools. NEU was the first private university in Cyprus to open Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry — still among the most sought-after programs by Arab students.
Popular programs:
Admission: NEU offers rolling admission. Most undergraduate programs do not require YÖS — a high school diploma with reasonable GPA and TOEFL/IELTS for English-track programs is typically sufficient. Apply directly at neu.edu.tr.
Tuition (annual, international students):
Scholarships: NEU offers merit scholarships ranging from 25% to 100% of tuition, with awards tied to academic record. Sibling and family discounts are also available.
Accommodation: On-campus student dormitories ($150–300/month), private off-campus housing in Nicosia, and shared apartments. Living costs in Nicosia are moderate — monthly expenses typically run $400–600.
English preparatory program: A 1-year English preparatory year is available for students who need to strengthen their English before joining English-medium programs.
Recognition: NEU is accredited by Turkey's YÖK and recognised by most Arab countries. Some countries (e.g. Egypt, Saudi Arabia) apply specific equivalency procedures to certificates issued in North Cyprus — applicants should verify the equivalency process with their home country's ministry before enrolling.
